Almost all religions are religions of peace, and religions of war.

Religions don't succeed unless they appeal to ruling elites, who sometimes want peace, and sometime want war. And a way to sell what they want to those outside the elite.

The problem with your hypothesis is that you allude to a society that is in some way progressing ("middle aged rules onto a modern society"), incrementally improving towards some ideal, and the casting aside of the previously established religions is a part of that progression. It begs the question, what or who defines what we are progressing towards? What benchmark are you measuring against and what makes you certain that the benchmark is immutable? If the ideal we are progressing towards is not immutable we could find that it changes and what we thought as progression was in fact regression. It seems this hypothesis requires the same certainties of the religions it is criticising.

No problem with believing in a "higher power" or something that is greater than us but these man made or defined "relegions" - with their strict rule based interpretations - which talk about things in absolute terms are obviously, by virtue of that fact, conjured up in the mind of human beings back in the day to give some hope, purpose, view of why we exist and our purpose etc. Lots of rules aimed at the psychology of shame amongst teh admittedly very good moral guidance.

Of course, man created all sorts of hierachies in these constructed religions to place people ( Priests, Imans, Archbishops etc.) in positions of power and influence over the uneducated illiterate masses. Hence the most successful marketing and indoctrination programs the world has seen, spreading two versions of a "world view" to all parts of the globe over 2000 years. Odd that they emanated from desert tribes but timing and being able to write them down was key.

Anyway, problem that stands out with the Islamic doctrine for me is that its never been subject to any kind of reformation or modernisation? Central to the belief system is to resist any changes with the normal shouts of herasy in the way Christianity did back in the middle ages. They even have a rule of law in place to impose the middle aged rules onto a modern society. All founded upon the subjugation of women of course which was all the rage across the world until 50 - 100 years ago and definitely not to be questioned back in the middle ages when these rules were first brought to the masses.

The other real issue with Islam has to be the use of Fatwas and issuing of death sentences and general disdain for other relgions or non-muslims ( Infidels ). Not exactly tolerant. Now we would hope that most Muslims are far more moderate but we never hear the message since the more extreme elements seem to control the narrative? There are groups that want a moderation ( Sunni led is one I think?) But the Wahhabi form seemed to take hold 30 or so years back since the Iran revolution and that seems to have been a turning point? Not helped by us imperalist nations plundering oil etc. and invading with armies but now with "infidel boots on the ground" no longer existing ( which IIRC was one of Bin Laden's reasons for sticking it to the West ) what is their main problem with the West now and justifies bombing civilians and the innocent?

Apparently the only one saying it's a terrorist attack so far is Doctor Who and Dancing on Ice star John Barrowman. He also said "there’s a lot of people dead bodies all over the place" but only one person died, so his reporting skills might not be top notch.
